Build Your Edge AI Robot: From Platform Technologies to Real-World Applications
As breakthroughs in edge computing continue to accelerate, AI is moving beyond centralized cloud environments and closer to the point of action, transforming robots into intelligent partners capable of perception, collaboration, and self-optimization. This shift is more than a change in where computing takes place—it represents a fundamental evolution in the way intelligence is deployed. Robots are no longer merely mechanical devices that execute commands; they are becoming autonomous entities capable of real-time decision-making and adaptive responses.
In this technical meetup, Intel experts will unveil how the Open Edge ecosystem and Robotics AI Suite provide developers and system integrators with a more open and modular AI platform, enabling teams to deploy, fine-tune, and optimize edge applications more efficiently. Industry practitioners from Orisol, PlayRobot, and FARobot will also share real-world use cases from footwear manufacturing lines, inspection operations, and smart factory environments, demonstrating how AI is redefining the role and operational logic of modern robotics.
Whether you are evaluating smart robotics solutions for your organization or building your own Edge AI applications, this session offers a valuable opportunity to explore both practical implementation and future trends, helping you master the key technologies driving the next wave of edge intelligence.
From User to Developer: Orisol Builds a New AI Automation Ecosystem for the Footwear Industry
Unlike Intel and Advantech, which shared their experiences from the perspective of solution providers, Orisol General Manager Yu-Ping Tseng offered a user-centric perspective, giving attendees a firsthand look at the transformative impact of AI-powered robotics in traditional manufacturing environments.
As part of Pou Chen Group, the world's largest footwear manufacturing group, Orisol has witnessed production volumes reaching record highs during the pandemic. However, the rapid tightening of the global labor market, combined with increasing demands from global brands and Western markets for ESG transparency, efficiency, and traceability, has created an urgent need for intelligent transformation in the labor-intensive footwear industry.
“The challenge we face is no longer simply labor shortages; the entire manufacturing process must be redefined,” Tseng emphad.
Tseng explained that Pou Chen began transforming its production processes several years ago through the adoption of Vision AI and automation technologies. From material defect inspection, upper positioning, and material cutting to process parameter optimization, Intel AI platforms and real-time control technologies have been progressively deployed across various production stages to replace highly experience-dependent manual operations.
Transforming Equipment from the Source“The purpose of AI is not to find mistakes. It is to make manufacturing processes measurable, repeatable, and ultimately better,” he said.
Pou Chen's transformation strategy extends beyond its own factories. Faced with varying levels of equipment capability and digital maturity across its supply chain, the company chose a more direct approach—investing in and acquiring key equipment suppliers. This strategy led to the acquisition of Orisol, a company with deep expertise in footwear machinery.
Orisol specializes in critical manufacturing processes such as cutting, bonding, upper assembly, and automated workstations. Traditionally, these processes relied heavily on manual expertise and conventional machinery. Through the integration of Pou Chen's extensive AI strategy, Orisol began incorporating the group's accumulated material image databases, process parameters, and defect case libraries directly into equipment design, enabling the next generation of footwear machinery to be AI-ready from inception.
As a result, new equipment now supports intelligent capabilities such as:
- AI-driven cutting path optimization
- Dynamic adjustment of bonding temperature and pressure
- Real-time defect detection on the production line
Through Orisol's equipment development expertise, AI is no longer merely an add-on tool attached to production processes; it has become an integral part of machine control logic itself.
“We are not just using equipment—we are making the equipment smarter together,” Tseng noted.
This vertically integrated approach, where AI is embedded directly into equipment, enables Pou Chen to improve process consistency and yield rates simultaneously across manufacturing sites in China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and other regions.
As a result, Pou Chen is evolving beyond the role of a traditional manufacturing giant to become a driving force and standards setter in the field of intelligent footwear manufacturing technology.
